One of the biggest sporting events has concluded. On February 6th, the Winter Olympics had officially kicked off, courtesy of the opening ceremony, bringing athletes from all around the world to compete. On Sunday, February 22nd, the event came to an end, as the games closed. The Winter Olympics consisted of a wide variety of sports, including Bobsledding, a high-speed winter sport where teams of two or four athletes make timed runs down narrow, twisting, banked ice tracks in a gravity-powered sled. Hockey, a fast paced scoring against the opposing team. Figure skating has choreographed routines on ice with jumps and spins. Skiing features jumps, tricks, downhill riding and much more, as well as many other activities. The event drew millions of viewers worldwide, who watched athletes represent their country everyday from the opening ceremony on February 6th to the official end. Many students tuned in.
“So far, I thought that it was pretty good. I liked all the events so far, especially how intense the competition is. I can’t wait to see snowboarding, and for the USA to win this year,” sophomore Hunter Millete exclaimed.
As the Winter Olympics continued, many attractions gained a great deal of attention as countries were competing fiercely for the highest medal counts. The United States, who were expected to be in the top three, have earned a total of 33 medals, including twelve gold. The US finished second in the medal race, only behind Norway, who finished with 41 total medals, as well as eighteen gold.
“I think it was a pretty exciting opening to the Winter Olympics for this year, and I’m getting ready for what this year has in store. I’m excited to see some of the main attractions like skiing, as well as figure skating. I know the US is going to get at least top three this year and maybe alongside Italy and France,” sophomore Liam Yi added.
All different countries around the world were desperately and actively competing to prove their hard work in their own sports.
“I’m excited for figure skating in the Olympics because I personally skate, and it’s something I always want to see,” sophomore Grace Ryu comments.
Just like figure skating, another greatly viewed attraction in the Winter Olympics is ice hockey, the fast paced scoring sport which is already watched and loved by many in the world.
“I think the game was really nice to watch and to see Canada’s hockey powerhouse go down: it was reminiscent of the Miracle on Ice game in 1980,” junior Artem Dolgushev said. The US won their first olympic gold medal in the sport for the first time in 46 years, as Jack Hughes scored the game winning goal in OT to beat Canada 2-1.
No matter the sport, viewers worldwide can agree the Olympics was an entertaining and unifying experience for the athletes and countries alike.
