Every now and then, your favorite or most nostalgic games such as Clash Royale, Brawl Stars, and Block Blast suddenly spike in popularity, going from under a thousand players to hundreds of thousands, maybe even millions of players. Player activity doesn’t just randomly spike; these surges are influenced by external factors.

A common reason certain players return to games, is that their favorite streamers playing that game and want to play said game. Streamers have a massive impact on gaming today.

“I was on social media and kept seeing this one streamer playing a game called Rainbow Six Siege so I decided to play again too and saw how lots of people are playing again because of the new season and streamer,” sophomore Henry Newton said.

“It might be bandwagoning, but just seeing how much it’s changed and how cool the next season is going to be was enough to convince me to play again, my friend is also doing the same exact thing,” Newton explained.

From the gamers perspective this is a positive thing to see old favorite games coming back once again but this can also be seen as a negative taking time away from people and focusing more on gaming than other things. Old games resurging can also take away from newer games and ultimately cover them up like they never existed.

“Over the past years I mainly see games overhyped and peak right when they come out but after a month they aren’t talked about at all due to everyone shifting over to the most popular games they’re seeing on social media. I’ve seen this happen with so many games like Among Us, Falls Guys, Marvel Rivals, and even Stumble Guys. They have everyone playing for a month and then just radio silence right after,” sophomore Liam Yi explains.

Friends and family definitely take a role in convincing others to play games.

“All my friends were playing Stumble Guys and Fortnite again and sending me Tiktoks about them and it just convinced me and we all hopped into a group call and started grinding, eventually I took a break because I had to do my school work, and that was the last time me and my friends played all together. Games come back and fall off just like that. It’s crazy I just wanted to play some Stumble Guys,” Yi mentioned.

Another reason old games resurge is from new fun updates and fresh content. Developers often release new events, seasons and features that give the game another look, even if its lost popularity for months. Players see these updates and feel curious, excited, or nostalgic, giving a reason to come back. This combined with social media creates a perfect environment for games to regain huge amounts of popularity quickly. Hype builds, people come back then the game fades again until the next update or the next revival via streamers.

Ultimately, the comeback of old games is a reflection of how the gaming community has become. Streamers, friends, social media, and developer updates all feed into the idea of games reappearing overnight. While some may see this as a distraction, it’s just a reminder of why these games got popular in the first place, and how gaming continues to change over time.
