As the Mustangs dominate Howard County, one student stands out, putting up consistent efforts to win, and making vital plays to lead Marriotts Ridge boys’ basketball to the first seed of Howard County and the MPSSAA Class 3A North Region II championship. That student is Blake Willingham.

In his third year as a varsity basketball player, Willingham averaged 16.3 points per game, 3.6 steals per game which is 14th highest in the state, and scored the most three pointers in county history with 71. Although his consistency and well-rounded statistics proves his in-game leadership and stellar performance, the actions he takes off the court are what really translates to the wins.

“I reflect on my performance at halftime, thinking about what I can improve on. With some advice from the coaches and self-reflection, I get back on the court ready to play better,” junior Blake Willingham stated.

Blake’s determination and perseverance to continue to build on his game helps translate to crucial buckets to help close out the wins for Marriotts Ridge basketball. Blake’s individual performance is only a fraction of his excellence. His bonding and cooperation with his teammates is what elevates his game further, along with the entire team’s collectively.

“Communication with my team and depending on each other helps so we’re on the same page, and it really helps us understand who we’re going up against and how we can beat the opposing team,” Willingham said.

Willingham’s close bond with his team allows them to play off each other effectively. Their chemistry and collaboration led their team to execute plays efficiently, to learn how to stop teams effectively, and to put points on the board consistently. The team as a whole contributes to this, but Willingham is a key piece of that puzzle. Blake’s collaborative and leadership qualities are not just limited to the basketball court. It is also seen on the field. In the 2024-25 football season, Blake Willingham began to start as the quarterback for the Marriotts Ridge varsity football team. In his second season he led the team to a regional championship, where he led Marriotts Ridge storm back against Frederick High School where they scored 19 straight points to win.

“Leading as a QB comes from a lot of leading by example, how you play, in the way you carry yourself during the game, and also in the game when everyone’s tired and we’re driving, a little bit of talking and encouragement to keep the guys ready and focused, I think that all goes a long way, but leading is my main thing,” Willingham explained.

His leadership comes from one main factor: his individuality. Blake’s focus on improving his own game and performing better sets the tone for the entire team. He knows in order for the team to play hard, he has to play hard, and he cannot let them down.

”For next season, we have a lot of guys coming back with a lot of talent and experience, and I think we’re just gonna keep working and building on what we did this year so we can succeed next year with hopefully a ring and ultimately putting Marriotts Ridge on the map,” Willingham said.

Willingham’s response shows that the off-season is more than just about his performance and improvement, but the team’s performance and improvement. Blake’s understanding that football and basketball are more than individual sports, and his unselfishness and consideration of his teammates makes him stand out. His determination to put Marriotts Ridge on the map, and his chase for the state championship will definitely give 2026-27 Howard County sports a spectacle to look out for.
