For over a decade, Taylor Swift has dominated the music industry, cultivating her image in country music. Now, as time has passed, listeners and fans are seeing her true ethics and witnessing her negative environmental impact. She has become unrelatable, out of touch, and unethical to listen to, making her a problematic figure to support.
Taylor Swift’s reach and influence are clear through her fanbase, the Swifties. As a group, the millions of Swifties across the globe unite with their love for Taylor Swift. But the fanbase is much more than just listeners bonding over the music. The group has a hostile atmosphere, creating a space where being a fan is almost competitive. This potentially deters new listeners because of the shrouded view of Taylor Swift online.
The fans don’t just cause social media discourse; they also cause ticket shortages and the rise of reselling problems. The Eras Tour was a performance showcasing all of Swift’s different eras, represented by each of her albums. She visited 21 countries, making the tour over 2 billion dollars in ticket sales alone. On the first day of the tour ticket pre-sale, the entire Ticketmaster website shut down due to overwhelming traffic. The tour was successfully sold out every night, and a ticket in the nosebleeds would resell into the 1,000s if you were lucky. The resale rate was never proportionate to the view of the tickets, and is part of the reason the reselling market is so vicious today.
Taylor’s marketing strategies have drawn criticism for their ethics and environmental impact. Despite a vinyl shortage in 2022, which forced smaller artists to halt vinyl production, Swift released multiple vinyl variants for her new album. Her frequent private
jetting around the world emits 8,300 tons of C02 into the environment yearly. Swift’s bank balance is high, and so are her carbon emissions.
Over the years, not only has Taylor contributed to the climate problem, but she has also completely shifted artistically, at least from what critics and listeners can observe. Unfortunately, her latest album, The Life of a Showgirl, is
far below the expectations of an artist with as much prestige as Taylor Swift. These topics are not relatable to the average listener and seem to have diverged from the feminist views Taylor originally stood for. Her out-of-touch, low-quality music and vocals are driving away new and old listeners.
Even though artists like Beyoncé are cancelled just for being successful, Taylor Swift, who pollutes and whose ethics are in question, remains in power. Her music charts consistently, even when it’s low quality. The music industry is crowded because of huge musical artists like Taylor Swift. The amount of space Taylor takes up in the industry, and her actions, combined with the declining quality of her music, really make it questionable to support her.
