While the flowers bloom in the late days of April, students at MRHS are given the chance to display their pride for the school during the school’s annual Spirit Week concluded by the Pep Rally, an event in which students are invited to participate in high energy activities in order to prove which grade is the top dog of the school. Spirit week calls for a time in which students are given a chance to say goodbye to the depressing winter and hello to vibrant colors and warm weather.
Third quarter of the school year is widely regarded as the “dog days” of the school year, where students often struggle to make it through the short, dry days of winter, and bipolar days of early spring. A major motivator that gets students through their days is knowing that there is a silver lining: Spirit Week and the Pep Rally, a time where students can get a foothold on the final stretch of the school year. This year, spirit week gave students the opportunity to dress up in unordinary themes. Some highlights were Adam Sandler Day and Neon day, with much of the student community showing up with dazzling colors filling the halls with vibrancy.
On Friday, class colors were given out for students to rep their pride on the bleachers. Freshman carried the color of yellow, sophomores red, juniors white and seniors black. However seniors were also invited to wear their committed college shirts to school too, filling the halls with bright futures leaving footprints for underclassmen to fill. As the pep rally began, bleachers began to fill and cheering began to erupt throughout the field. As Marty Mustang greeted the spring athletes, they were greeted with loud cheers and ear quaking applause.
As the games commenced, laughter and cheer continued to roar while set up for the games began. The first of the pep rally game was musical chairs, in which Karis Barnet musically brought home the first victory for the Juniors. Ro-sham-bo itself proved to be quite the event, with sophomore Alex Mun taking home more than an armful of beads. Leading to the finale of the pep rally, Marty Mustang was revealed to be none other than senior Malcom Parsons.
“It was really fun to see the shock on everyone’s face when I took the mask off. I think it was a great surprise, “explains Parsons.
As the grand finale, Tug o’ War would prove to be a triumphant battle between the juniors and seniors, with both sides having dominant forces on each side of the rope. As the round started, the student section reached well over 100dB of volume (as loud as concerts) in order to show their support for their peers. Ultimately, the juniors pulled through with a dominant finish over the Seniors which would lead to the juniors getting the trophy and title of the pep rally champions. Although the pep rally of the 25-26’ school year concluded, the memories and cheers will carry us through the end of the year. Go Mustangs!
