At Marriotts Ridge, student achievement extends beyond academic accomplishments and victories in athletics and the arts. Some Mustangs leave their mark through the impact they have on the people around them. This month, The Stallion’s Mustang on the Map turns the spotlight on Wendell Stepp, a student whose involvement in athletics, music, and other school organizations has made him a familiar face throughout Marriotts Ridge.

Stepp’s involvement at Marriotts Ridge covers a variety of interests. As a member of the football and lacrosse teams, chorus, and Alpha Achievers, he has found ways to contribute to different parts of the school community.

“Being such a large part of the Ridge community is not an easy task, but it is very rewarding,” Stepp shared. “Being able to mentor younger students and be a role model, whether that is in football, lacrosse, Alpha Achievers, or Madrigals, really brings me happiness.”

While these activities require dedication and time, what stands out to those who know Stepp is not simply the number of organizations he participates in, but the attitude he brings to each one.

“He is energetic. A complete team player, loves to sing. [He] has a beautiful attitude towards choir and life in general,” choir teacher Mr. Rawlings shared. “He is always willing to lend a helping hand to both students and adults, no matter what he has going on in his life or schedule.”

His willingness to put others first is a quality that goes beyond choir. Officer Kane described Stepp as respectful and someone who consistently goes the extra mile without hesitation, referring to Stepp as “a ‘glue guy’ and a leader who helps who holds it together when things get hard.”

His positive outlook has also become a source of encouragement for those around him at Marriotts Ridge. Whether through his enthusiasm for singing or his willingness to help someone in need, Stepp has established himself as someone who makes the school environment a little brighter.

“What the Ridge community needs a little more of is the ability to uplift their peers, something I strive to do,” Stepp reflects. “Knowing my teachers think I’m a bright presence makes me thankful for every experience that has brought the staff to that conclusion.”

Despite balancing these commitments, Stepp continues to prioritize the people around him, demonstrating that being an active member of a community means more than participating in its activities. Possibly what distinguishes Stepp most, however, is the way he represents leadership. Principal Dennis described him as “a quiet leader who consistently does the right thing because it’s the right thing to do. He cares for others, and our school is a better place for having students like him in it.”

While leadership is often associated with those who can get the most attention, Stepp stands as a strong example that impact can be made in everyday actions. His dedication to his teams, his enthusiasm for music, and his consideration for others reflect the values that make Marriotts Ridge a welcoming community. As Stepp continues to pursue his interests and take on new opportunities, the impact he has already made on those around him will stand as a legacy that extends far beyond his extracurricular accomplishments.
